CASCO BAY BRIDGE 5K, PORTLAND, AUGUST 31

Uncertifiably fast times provided a real ego booster for hundreds at this
"once in a lifetime" chance to run across the new bridge spanning Casco Bay
and connecting Portland with South Portland and Cape Elizabeth.
Running toward her childhood home in Cape Elizabeth, Joan Benoit
Samuelson, 40, posted a winning 16:30 to take both the women's Open and
Master's divisions, not to mention a 19th place overall among the men.
Christine Braceras (18:15) took 2nd, while Master's phenomn Carol Hogan,
47, took 3rd overall in 18:41.In all, 13 women dipped under 20:00 in
celebrating the new bridge's opening.
Overall winner, Byrne Decker (15:03) accumulated 16 seconds over second
place Steve Sarkozy of Scarborough (15:19). A new generation of runners
served notice as Ben Fletcher, 17, of Auburn, Maine announced his arrival
on the Portland scene with a 5th place overall 15:54 with Ryan Fenton, 16,
of Portland (16:01) and Ben Ray, 18, (16:06) also from Auburn and Jared
Moore (17) of Yarmouth (16:07) placing 8th,10th and 11th overall,
respectively. Mandy Bowden (13) of Cumberland's 20:16 placed her ahead of
all the female 15-19 year old finishers.
Runners of the future were represented by world class ultra runner Kim
Moody's twin 8 year olds. Elise Moody posted an eyebrow raising 23:15 while
brother Stanis managed a 27:55 for 3rd in his age group.
