Woodstock for Runners.  Great Cranberry Island -  Runners and their families are encouraged to attend the festivities surrounding the 1st Great Cranberry Ultra Marathon to be held on July 28. Some of the best Ultra runners from around the USA will converge on Cranberry Island which has been compared to Oregon's Hayward Field as a historic and motivating place to run. In the 70s and 80s Cranberry hosted a road race which was named by Runners World as one of the top 25 races in the entire country. Eventually the epic popularity required organizers to hold a lottery to choose from the hundreds of runners who wanted to run in this event which earned a cult following, per capita. Great Cranberry has also been credited with producing more excellent runners than any town anywhere. The Great Cranberry Ultra will test runners for 50K - 50M and 100K. However runners who may not be up to covering these extreme distances are invited to come do a training run, consider volunteering and take part in the free camping, music, swimming and bon fires. Family members and especially musicians are encouraged to attend.  Prospective attendees are also encouraged to check out the current July issue of Downeast Magazine for an excellent feature, 'Treasured Islands' with many great pictures for a sneak preview.
