Dear Members of the MPA Ad Hoc Committee on Athletic Policy:

I am writing to encourage you to continue to allow schools and athletes to make their own choice about participating at the New England Championship track meets. As a parent of two daughters, each of whom has participated in indoor and/or outdoor track, I know first hand the value of having this experience available to athletes. My high-school senior is not at a level that she will qualify for New England’s and my other daughter is now running track at her Division III college and was fortunate to have been able to compete at the New England Championship meets on several occasions.

I think the opportunity to have athletes at this event is beneficial to the entire team. Educators have documented the value of creating “aspirations” in our students.  High school administrations are constantly looking for ways to help our students set higher goals and work hard to achieve them. This regional meet create such aspirations and allows all team members to benefit as each member works towards the highest possible goal.

I will never forget watching my daughter at her first New England meet. She was a bundle of nerves and the whole experience was new and unfamiliar. I know this experience was one that helped her navigate the new and unfamiliar transition to college. It is my sincere hope that you do not take this opportunity away.

Please reconsider your decision and continue to offer this cost-effective opportunity that is of tremendous value to our athletes.

Sincerely,

Jody Jones
