HISTORY OF MAINE XC RUNNERS AT FOOTLOCKER/KINNEY NATIONALS

Maine cross country runners have a strong history of qualifying for one of the coveted 32 positions at what is probably the only undisputed national championship in high school sports.  The event began in 1979 and was known as the Kinney Cross Country Championships until 1993 when Footlocker took over the sponsorship.  For all but a few years when it was held in Orlando, Florida, the race has been held at Balboa Park in San Diego, California.  To qualify for the national meet, runners must finish in the top 8 at one of four regional meets.  The Northeast Regional is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving at venerable Van Cortland Park in New York City.
