UMPI SPRING RUN OFF 5K, PRESQUE ISLE, APRIL 6
by Marj Tennyson

Caribou High School's P.J. Gorneault led the field during this
early spring runoff, coming home a winner in 17:20. 15-18 year old
winner, Craig Waugh (17:31) had more spring in his legs than Boston
Marathon entrant Newell Lewey (17:37) who moved down from racing 15 miles
at Readfield two weeks before, to sharpen his speed. Also entered at
Boston, Master Frank McElwain (18:11) was unable to hang on to David Tree
(17:41), who took the men's master title and 4th place overall.
Jessica Babin (20:14) led the women, followed by Angela Edgecomb
